When It’s Hard to Pray

We’ve all been there at some point or another. Life seems like it is going too fast and so much is happening so quickly that you no sooner take care of one problem when another arises. You may have many different situations that need a resolution all at once. Maybe there are financial problems and before you can resolve one, another one shows up. It could be spiritual, emotional, physical or medical problems. Maybe many of them are not even your problems but those of people you love and care about.

When everything seems to be escalating out of control, many, and I have to include myself in this, have trouble praying. I’ve learned, however, that you can pray at any given time and even given place. Private prayers are what I call them. They are the quick little prayers that go up in a moment’s notice, very similar to the small, powerful prayers I have spoken about before.

Is that where you are today? Billy needs braces and when you think you have enough for the down payment, the car breaks down, or you just got over a severe cold, missed quite a few days of work, and all of a sudden you find you have strep throat. Your son or daughter is having problems in their marriage and are asking for advice, just about the time your sister calls and wants some instinctive insight into a problem she is having.

It is a roller coaster ride that seems to mainly travel downward. Just about the time you think you have made it to the top, it swerves and heads back down at break-neck speed.

You are not alone. You are among thousands, perhaps even millions of people who are struggling in their everyday life just trying to survive. Insurmountable problems just seem to be their destiny. They pray, but everything is going so quickly that they can’t seem to get the right words out to tell God what they need.

You can’t go running to the closet at work, drop to your knees and pray, every time there is a crisis there. No, your supervisor expects you to sit at your desk until the problem is solved. You can’t run to the doctor every time you have an ache or pain and you can’t create your own money when finances go into a spiral.

The one thing you can do is pray at the moment everything is happening. Contrary to some beliefs, the Devil, that old devious dog, Satan, cannot hear your thoughts. He can only use what he sees and hears to work in his favor. Speaking in tongues is also another way to block his perception of what he can use against you in your life, however  doing this in a public place or work environment can cause a ruckus that would cost you your job or have you sent for mental evaluation.

Since that old dog cannot hear your thoughts all you have to do is direct your thoughts to God in an instant. “God help” “Jesus, Please” Holy Spirit be with me”, “God protect me” God direct me” etc. are all thought prayers I have used many times before. Even when I would get ready for my evening prayer, often after a day filled with one problem after another, I have been so overwhelmed that I found it hard to put my needs, fears and petitions into words. Those are the times when I would just cry out “God, please, you know the need”.

Are you overwhelmed by life? The everyday hustle and bustle, trying to solve problems that come too fast and pile up, trying to take care of your finances, family, job and still keep your sanity? Cry out to god in a few simple words. He can hear your thoughts, he can see your need, and he just wants you to ask.

Matthew 6: 7-8 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Romans 8:26-27 in the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will

Psalm 139:1-4  O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

Be Blessed, Lori
