The Bible and Music

February 23,2016

bibleThe Bible according to Wikipedia is a collection of texts sacred in Judaism and Christianity. It is a collection of scriptures written at different times by different authors in different locations. Jews and Christians consider the books of the Bible to be a product of divine inspiration or an authoritative record of the relationship between God and humans.

There is no single canonical “Bible”; many Bibles have evolved, with overlapping and diverging contents. The Christian Old Testament overlaps with the Hebrew Bible and the Greek Septuagint; the Hebrew Bible is known in Judaism as the Tanakh. The New Testament is a collection of writings by early Christians, consisting of narratives, letters and apocalyptic writings. Among Christian denominations there is some disagreement about the contents of the canon, primarily in the Apocrypha, a list of works that are regarded with varying levels of respect.

I have read many translations of the Bible and most of them are mainly the same. It gives us the basics to live by, provides us with a history of the world and the human race and instills in us a respect and appreciation for all the God does/ has done for us.

My personal opinion, after much research and studying, is that the basics texts of the Bible(s) are true and are the guideline God gave us, to teach us how to act, how to think, and how to live. I also believe that there is much that has been left out of the bible, through different translating procedures or on purpose by certain higher officials in the original church. I also believe, after reading many translations that there could have been changes and additions to the bible by mere humans. Even at that, it give us the basic ideas and concepts to model our lives after.

I am thankful for the Bible, the history it provides, the insight into how the earth and human kind began, the struggles that our early ancestors dealt with, the strength and power of God, and his immense love for us and the guidelines on how to live.

Music is beautiful, real music that is, not the noise and vulgar language of the most popular music in this day and age. I remember singing little nursery rhymes when I was younger. I remember the old favorites we sang in choir, and my step father instilled in me an appreciation for operas and classical music.

David played music while praising God. His musicians played on the trumpet, on horns, the lyre, and the pipe, the timbrel, the harp and the flute. His choirs sang psalms unto the lord and there places in the bible that speak about trumpets sounding in the heavens.

I could sit for hours and listen to Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. I could listen to the old Irish and Celtic ballads all day long. I love to listen to the natural music of the insects, birds and small animals in the woods and the natural music of nature like the falling rain, the wind in the trees and the thunder in a storm. I am thankful for all the music , the real music in this world.
